10-10ths challenge: 24
I have just been reading this week's Autosport and on p47 Peter Higham notes that there have been 24 world championship GP which have been decided on the last lap. Before the pedantic of you say so he means a change of position for the lead!
24 is less than one every two years. Hardly surprising as there are plenty of other laps to decide it on first and generally someone has it sewn up by then. Here is the challenge: Can we name them all? If someone has a list of them all don't spoil it for the others, but we may be calling on you later! Off the top of my head I can think of about ten, but as I've got a head start I'll not post any. I would imagine that most, if not all, of those will be got before I return. |

Interlagos 2003 - Fisichella passed Raikkonen on the last lap.
That was the last time before this weekend. Very few drivers have lost a race on the last lap - even fewer twice! |

So we have 2005 European GP. Kimi's puncture leads to Alonso's win. 2003 Bazilian GP. Fisi overtakes Kimi on what becomes the last lap. 2001 Spanish GP. Mika's engine blows. 2002 Austrian GP. Michael lets Rubens win. 1997 Hungarian GP. Damon has a mechanical problem. Villeneuve wins. 1997 European GP. Villeneuve lets Mika past. 1991 Canadian GP. Mansell stalls on the last lap waving to the crowd. Piquet wins. 1991 Japanese GP. Senna gives the win to Berger. 1981 Monaco. Villeneuve gains from Jones. I haven't checked all these, but I reckon they are right. BTW Monaco is a good one for this... |

You mean they had GP before 1997?
Thanks. I'd not considered the Clark one. One of the drivers mentioned so far is the only driver to lose out more than once in such a situation (apart from Kimi). He lost the lead three times on the final lap. |

Well we are over half way now.
Monza 1967? I don't think it was Brabham who lost out (on the last lap)> He was suffering from an over-revved engine and Surtees got him a few laps before the end. However it was Jim Clark who lost out on the last lap giving the victory to Surtees. Clark had dropped to 15th (and a lap down) due a tyre problem (pointed out by Brabham!). It was an amazing come back at Monza, that failed because he ran out of fuel. I was only taking about this in another thread on 10-10ths yesterday. |

Melbourne 1998, when DC let Mika by on the last corner so Mika would win, and din't stop winning again, after Mika had to pit one extra time, Mclaren felt bad for him so let him win.

Imola 1996, didn't Schumacher's fron wing break of at the last corner of the last lap, when he would have won his first win for Ferrari yet he lost the race to Damon Hill?

Sorry again. Michael was already second when it went and he retained second. It was a right front wheel/brake issue rather than a broken wing too. IIRC he had a failure right at the end of qualifying that year too, but still had pole!

Was Jerez '97 on the last lap, or did David let Mika by earlier than that?
There are a few in the 80s, I think. Don't remember who won, but I'm almost positive Nigel Mansell ran out of fuel on the last lap and lost the race win. I'm sure those with better memories of the 80s will be able to complete it after I've started it! |
