EB16.4 Veyron
Wow.
8 liters, 16 cylinders, 4 turbochargers. 987 horsepower, 922 pound-feet of torque. Nearly two tons, but 0-60 in 2.5s. 407.2 km/h (253 mph) 1.25 million dollars. Wow. Bugatti EB16.4 Veyron |

Fascinating engine.
Pistons aligned in a "W" formation, with a single crankshaft and continuously variable cam timing. Dry-sump lubrication. Paddle-driven sequential gearbox with computerized clutch. The underside is venturi-shaped. Googling the car, I followed a link for a website I know well, How Stuff Works. Pretty informative read. From there, I followed this link and followed the instructions contained therein. This lead to a series of videos about the car's engine. |

It's obviously an incredible piece of work, typical of a project influenced by Mr Piech, though it has taken them an awfully long time to get it right.
Personally, I'd still prefer a McLaren F1, which I bet would be pretty much as quick around a circuit despite having a puny 600-odd bhp! |

I saw a cut-away version of the W8 used in the Phaeton and Passat at the New York Auto Show in April and I must say it is a very innovative piece of engineering.
I really appreciated seeing the manufacturers bring this sort of thing (cut-away versions of engines, chassis, other mechanics) as it really lets you see how things work in there-and helps to educate the normal public. |

Amazing. I can't believe it took the car manufacturers over 10 years to buil something faster than the Mclaren F1. I remember when I was growing up (80's and early 90's) that every year there was a new fastest car. And after the mclaren there was nothing. Not even by Lamborghini, ferrari or Porsche. It's nice to see that the drought is finally over.

Like most recent VW group cars, it's based on the Golf platform.

Does 'Veyron' mean anything or is it just a fancy name thought up by the marketing people?

Correct Dani. Pierre Veyron shared the winning supercharged Bugatti Type 57C in the 1939 event with Jean-Pierre Wimille.
