Goodbye Molson?
Local Toronto radio station is reporting this morning that Molson is getting out of auto race promotion, handing it back to Champ Car. No other details yet.

Dover dumped St. Pete, Denver and Long Beach. Now Molson has dumped Vancouver, handed off Montreal to Legault and is selling Toronto. Molson built that race in Toronto. We don't know what we don't know, but I'd guess Molstar doing the TV production is probably gone after this season, too, if this is happening....particularly with hockey back.

Could get a lot more expensive for Champ Car to promote and operate the Toronto race....
But it should succeed...it has been a successful event... |

On the good side, if Molsons is out of race promotion then maybe TSN won't be able to hang on to the Canadian rights for Champ Car broadcasts. (Molsons is the sponsor for those broadcasts, and it links the sponsorship to the brands that are the focus for each Canadian race.)
Given TSN's obvious disregard for the Champ Car fan I'd be pleased to see this happen. And I notice that Edmonton did just fine without Molson. Maybe it's time Toronto did the same. keke |

I don't think the TO race itself is in jepordy, but it could further diminish its stature. Molson did a very good job at making the TO/Vancouver races national events. Edmonton was the biggest success in its local market, but it didn't have a lot of national coverage.

What Molson did better than anybody else was advertise. If there was a race in Toronto, they made damned sure that everybody in Ontario knew about it.

That's playing hardball....
Buy it by Halloween or it is up for grabs... Looks like KK and GF are going to have to write another check... |

Doesn't sound bad to me. Champcar will have control of the event and Molson will continue with sponsorship.

I wonder what kind of money Molson is going to send to KK, GF for this.
It may be almost worth looking around at other sponsors if it's too low, they need this race, and I would hope they don't take to much of a dive to get it. |

Poster at another forum quoted a Street and Smith's Business Journal analyst story saying the price was $25-30 million for the race and $10-15 million more for the TV production operation. Didn't say U.S. or Canadian dollars. Not confirmed anywhere. And the money is going from KK/GF to Molson to buy the race, not the other way around. Probably, Molson will in turn pay a sponsorship fee back to CC to sponsor the race as part of the deal.

What's the $10-15M for "TV production operation"?
To buy Molstar? Surely not. To have Molstar produce the feed? That's alot of money. I don't understand what that must mean. |

Soon the racing world will be entirely owned by Kalkhovens, Ecclestones and Frances.

Perhaps it's to buy the Molstar's production/broadcasting rights plus all of Molstar's associated equipment, etc? I have to agree with macdaddy, that seems like an awfull lot! Frankly they only need the broadcasting rights.

Don't know any more than what the story said....it's a subscription site. Looks like pretty much guesswork, depending on what they're buying. Like in the case of Cosworth on engines, they could be buying the whole TV production company. Time will tell.

Why would they need to buy back their own broadcasting rights? The contract likely expires every couple of years (probably every year) anyways. So I don't think that has anything to do with it.

They didn't sell broadcast rights to Molstar. They hired Molstar's TV production arm to do the production of all the telecasts.

Molstar produces a helluva lot more than just ChampCar. This $10-15M figure is intriquing.
