Dick Johnson and Days of Thunder

I think I have heard that Dick Johnson made a cameo in "Days Of Thunder".

Having just bought the DVD to add to my motor movies collection I was wondering if anyone had any idea where and how he appears in the film?

At Darlington - he's in the number 38 car that goes past in the background at some point - sponsor is Redkote.

You bought it? Dear me, are you that desperate?

TSR has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
And you only see for a mill second when the star COLE TRIKLE is in the pits and he zooms past in the background on the banked corner.

I picked up a copy from the $5 specials bin at JB ages ago

Mind you I also purchased Rendezvous (Tech Books) when it was first released & found a copy of Le Mans (the movie) at my local KMart.

Still looking for a copy of Grand Prix though but am in no hurry to find Drivel, sorry Driven.

Yes I bought it and like PVDA I picked it up in the $5 bin.

I also have Le Mans but Grand Prix has never been released on DVD although I did find an online petition once for the studio to release it again.

PVDA, Twin Webbers, if you like the originals then dont forget Winning with Paul Newman which shows a heap of good indycar footage from Indianapolis and Elkhart Lake in 66 - 67.

All three movies, GranPrix, Lemans and Winning have only recently been shown on cable on the old movies channels.

I was channel surfing last night and stumbled across the racing footage during the movie "On The Beach" which was a Hollywood film made in Melbourne in the early 60's.

I'm not going to comment on the action as it was slightly over done, well very over done.......

I read the novel a few years ago. From memory they decide to use the last remaining fuel they have saved to run a race meeting down at Phillip Island. Needless to say with everyone going to die from atomic radiation some of the drivers take risks they would not have done otherwise.

They were not. The track was supposed to be PI, the old PI, but the racing scenes and crashes were done at the now defunct Riverside Raceway in California. You do notice some desert scenes in some of the shots.

Odd; when the World Motorbike Championship first came to PI, Channel 9 showed a brief segment on the history of motor racing on the island, including home movie footage of scenes of 'On the Beach' being shot at the circuit. That said, I haven't watched the movie myself...
