Le Mans for beginners

Hey guys (sorry for the double post those of you who have noticed).

A mate and I are planning to go down to le mans this year (we live just south of london) and have been taking a look around but we're getting a bit confused with everything and wondered if you could answer a few questions for us.

First, we're going for "student" tickets but I read somewhere (I think on this site) that you could only get them on the day. Is this true? Also, what counts as a student card?

Second, we're trying to camp down there. We originally thought we would either go for Chapelle (because its cheap and close to everything) or Houx (because it's nice). However, everything we read seems to say that you need to book up to a year in advance. Do you think we would still be able to get either of these/any camping at all? If so which do you think would be the best of these to go to (this is bearing in mind of course that we are students (read skint) so money is an object).

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers guys

Le mans first timers

If you want to see the race without spending much, suggest you get a camping ticket as soon as possible, I believe the only camping tickets left are Beausjour, up near the porsche curves, you can get them direct from the ACO (The circuit) The only camping tickets close to the main part of the track sold out before the start of last years race, although a large number of them sold to touts and agencies, see E Bay etc.

The cheaper alternative is buy a Parking Ticket, Rouge is best, and get there early, you can camp on the edges of the car park, however little or no facilities and no security. Parking tickets again from the ACO.

The cheapest way down is via the Channel, using speed ferries. Still some £25 each way tickets I think. The race tickets are sold on the Gate, and are about EUR60 so not expensive compared to UK race prices, for the student discount check with the ACO again. Once camped you can drive to supermarkets without problem, so food/drink is cheap.

Hope you make it this year if you do you will be hooked and in 20 years time you will be giving others advice.

One of the best places for advice and possible camping tickets is Club Arnage

FOUR, to be exact. 1999, 2000, 2001 & 2002. There would have been more in the succeeding years but for spousal "Francophobia". PM for details.
