More advertising banners
I realise 10-tenths has to make ends meet but I have to ask - is it going to be a case of just continually adding new methods of displaying advertising every few months or will things settle down?
First you have the Google advertising banners, then the Advertars and now a new post-style advertising strip at the bottom of pages. From an outsiders perspective it looks like new methods are being trialled to prevent users switching off advertising -this is probably not the real case, but I have to say - it does appear that way. |

It looks to me that these ads at the bottom are "smart" ads that are linked to the topic subject. Sheila's topic about kids ear defenders had an ad for ear defenders at the bottom!! I was pretty impressed.
I'm not bothered by the ads - I think I naturally filter them out. |

I thought one was actually a post at first glance!
They're not to intrusive, so I think they're fine |

However I notice they are not displayed in this forum (hypocritical?)
Just an observation about them. |

As always, subscribers have the option of turning all adverts off. I'm sure there will be some cynical people who will now complain that this is another attempt to "force" people to subscribe. Quote:

Where there isn't a product with a high enough relevance then an advert isn't displayed. The weighting system isn't perfect and does throw up some strange things and I've had a few good laughs at some of the suggestions. |

Not trying to make light of this - but wouldn't this, in the long run, be detrimental to any advertising spaces 10-tenths tries to sell to advertisers?
I know we have had this discussion before - but surely you should stick to one advertising method which can only be disabled by a proper subscription (by proper I mean paid up). This would then solve both problems highlighted here - the one where 'subscribers' can turn advertising off and advertisers can be assured that their method of delivery won't be changing in 2 (or3 or 4) months time to yet another format. This would provide potential sponsors with some stability in their campaigns. |

I have to ask, though - why is this thread/forum exempt from the advertising banners?

Just to demonstrate - http://tentenths.com/forum/showthread.php?t=79991
Once again - Ten-Tenths is a non-profit making, privately run and funded site. Without advertising, we don't have a site. If you don't like the adverts, take out a subscription. Otherwise, please try to support our advertisers - assuming you want the site to continue. |

I have to say that I am highly entertained by the advert that goes with this thread....

You see - I had this much fun with the little Advertars as well! I think it just requires the right (or is that wrong?) sense of humour! |

Ah, I seem to remember putting this idea forward to the powers that be, so you can all give me a kicking when you next see me.
I have just noticed there is an ad for fishing (Flycasting) on zefarlly's Aluminium casting thread. |

Ah now that's just unfair. There's few enough perks to this job as it is...

I like the new adverts (at least "much prefer" them). They also seem much more likely to get me to follow them.
(But advertising chocolate to me is a sneaky trick. Thinks: Can I get an advert blocker which will selectively edit out choclate? ) Regards Jim |
