minimangler should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
The sequel to Help! Equipment.

feel free to come up with a funny name buuut...
I felt if i just tacked this onto the old one it might get ignored and I could do with some advice on this list in the next 24 hours, from all you fantastic snappers. You've helped greatly in the past, guys, and now its time to go again Any help is great, please and thankyous.

This is a list of what to spend £2500 worth of grant on, for motorsport use.
The totals are made up of Whole numbers (ie 19.99 would become 20, and 19.49 would be 19.50).

I got all my prices off digital rev, as they seemed VERY cheap.

Here is the list, any comments, queries, amendments are very welcome

http://www.digitalrev.com/en/product...hp?item_id=982
Nikon d200 body only, price £654.99

http://www.digitalrev.com/en/product...ategory_id=141
Nikkor af-s 80-200 f2.8 D ED zoom, £402.99

http://www.digitalrev.com/en/product...ategory_id=142
Nikon Nikkor af-s 300mm f4 D ED-IF £512.99

http://www.digitalrev.com/en/product...ategory_id=134
Nikon Nikkor af-s 18-70mm f 3.5-4.5 G DX zoom £162.99

http://www.digitalrev.com/en/product...category_id=38
Kenko 1.4x teleconverter Pro 300. DG £71.49

Running total: £1805.50

http://www.digitalrev.com/en/product...category_id=33
Sandisk Extreme III 8GB compact flash £92.99 x2 = £185.98

http://www.digitalrev.com/en/product...category_id=78
Nikon SB 800 Speedlight flash £187.99

Total: £2179.50

This is a first draft.

Your advice on tripods please?

And is there any point getting SB800 over SB 600? What’s so good?

Note: i haven't included postage yet, and that could run up another few hundred with all that hefty kit!

cheers a lot!

Just added: http://www.digitalrev.com/en/product...category_id=36
Nikon MB-D200 Battery grip: £77.99

Takes total up to £2257.50

Worth getting even more batteries/grips?

Two sets of batteries (i.e. 4 in total) is probably enough. I have two cameras and three batteries, but the 1 series bodies use one battery as they don't have an optional battery grip (the vertical shooting etc. is built in).

Tripods, I would probably go something Manfrotto, but it's probably best to go in a shop and have a look, you can always then buy it online for cheaper. You don't want anything too flimsy, particularly if you are using big lenses on it, I had a £20 job from Asda that would probably be fine for your compact camera, but struggled with a big SLR. Now we use a £180 Manfrotto.

With digirev, be aware that they are based in Hong Kong, and you may well get charged import duty and VAT when the stuff is delivered. That will happen at your door, and can add a fair bit to the cost.

I know bog all about most of the equipment and will leave you with the boys who know....but....

Those storage cards look woppingly expensive and my concern with one big card over several smaller cards is the "what if" of one going kapput on you and taking potentially 8gb of images with it...

Personally I'd go for smaller cards and swap more often...

From what little I know, I agree with Piglet wholeheartedly. Dont put all your eggs in one basket (or two). I think plenty of 2gb cards would be better. Or at a push 4gb cards if you intend to mainly shoot RAW.

By the way. That 80-200 is not an AFS lens. If you want AFS it's going to be 70-200 with VR and more than doubles the cost.

The 80-200 of mine that you borrowed is an AFS.

One question I have is why you want a tripod, if this kit is primarily for motorsport shooting the you don't need one, tripods and motorsport don't mix, to the point where if you are shooting inside the fence in most cases they are not allowed.

This a new one on me.........tripods are a no no in hot pit lanes but are used extensively by the TV and Video guys when trackside...........and by stills guys for time exposure and other appropriate shots............a good monopod would be a better investment for motorsports.

"Investing" with Uncle Dave could be as rewarding as "Investing" with Uncle Gordon has been in the past 10 years.....all of us in the UK can see the benefits of that course of action..........and Piglet you are right he could do with a new Prada......the old one is tatty after the Spa rain

Import duty on digital cameras is 0% and on lenses 6.7%.......adding that to the cost, a further 17.5% VAT is levied............plus a handling fee.......check these figures but they were current when I last looked at the issue. HM Revenue and Customs will be on the alert for items sent from Hong Kong and will seek to levy the appropriate charges at every opportunity. On the back of a fag packet this will add at least £500 to the total cost of your wish list. And delivery will not take place till you pay their bill in full.

As to 8GB cards.........not all cameras will support their use. Something to do with FAT tables!!!

A solution that may be easier on the budget is to look at getting hold of secondhand gear...........today's latest and greatest must have body becomes tomorrow's red headed step child with alarming ease and speed.....and can be picked up at a bargain price relative to their specification...........lenses properly looked after will hold their performance and can be found at good prices with some work with the better dealers.

Given that most of the Prosumer digital camera systems produce good files that can be printed up to DPS at a push, which is as large as most of us will ever get published, I would suggest that acquiring the gear be done as economically as possible. Learning the techniques of how to use the equipment is more important, equipment can be bought, ability has to be worked at. Also if the intention is to make some kind of a career out of this aspect of photography the focusing on the business part of the equation is more important than firing away at 8 frames a second. I would however suggest that no matter how good you are behind the camera that you don't quit the day job..........the business of making money through photography as whole is on a death spiral, only the very good and the very large (Getty, AP etc.) will survive.

i think, and am fairly sure have been reassured, that as the purchase is going throught a goverment office (oh the joy) i dont have to pay vat. This could need some checking! As for a tripod, yes, i want it for long exposure shots, and i dont just take motorsport stuff! i took some really good ones of a roundabout at night, and only just managed to stay stable.

mike, cheers about hong kong. now looking for new stores!!!

possibly digital depot now.

Back to the AFS 80-200. Nikon stopped these back in 2004. Strange how they can still have new ones and at less than s/h prices.

Youth Opportunities fund. Basicallym it was a fund set up so that groups (or single) 11-19 year olds could apply for money to do something they otherwise would be unable to do. I got lucky, and after a nice application with a portfolio and droning about how much i love motorsport (there wasn't a single lie, that i can remember) i got granted the full amount i applied for, ie £2500. And i wouldn't say its a business- I'd rather go with an agency, or I'll never get a press pass.

Last time I talked to Jessops they would price match Internet shops . . .

For CF cards in the UK you will find it hard to beat http://www.tiktak-it.co.uk/ e.g. SanDisk 12GB Extreme III £110 inc vat and shipping.

The D200 is heavy on batteries . . you might get away with 2 for a days use . . . you don't want to get caught short though.

Good luck.
