Smith to be named #01 driver for 2008: Dale Earnhardt Inc. has reached a verbal agreement with Regan Smith to drive the #01 Chevy in the Nextel Cup series next season, a NASCAR source told ESPN.com on Wednesday. Smith will fill the car driven this season by Mark Martin and Aric Almirola, who will split the 2008 season in the #8 Chevy currently being driven by Dale Earnhardt Jr. Smith will have a one-year deal with an option for a second year.(ESPN.com)(8-30-2007)

Great news for him, looked like he might really get shafted by the DEI/Ginn merger, he was doing a real good job in the Busch series before the #4 got shut down.

I was hoping that Regan would get the 01 ride but with DEI you never know. Mark Martin did a lot of campaigning for Regan. I am really happy to see Regan get a chance full time. I just hope they give him a little time for the team to come together. There is not a nicer and polite young man in Nascar. It is time though for him to start delivering on his potential. Go get'em Regan.
