FRenault Winter Championship 2002 - Place your bets!
The 2002 Formula Renault Winter Championship starts this weekend at Donington Park, and it's anyone's guess as to who will win it. The title seems to be up in the air - Will Firstair be able to provide Bell with a winning car on their debut? Will Rossiter win it for Fortec, or will one of his ex-FFord team-mates prove to be faster? Or will it be one of the European teams that takes the title?
Each meeting consists of four races. Two heats (for odd and even numbers), a last chance race, and a final. If anyone wants to predict the top five for the final they're welcome. |

I think Robert Bell Might win it again.
If Firstair do have a car that is quick then Don't rule out the other driver Paul Rivett he is the Clio Champion after all. Top 5 for the final: 1.Bell 2.Hall 3.Rossiter 4.Stoddart 5.Rivett |

Experience, talent, equipment plus that vital element called luck are the key factors. That said,I predict final championship positions as follows:
1.Turkington (all of the above) 2.Hall (the equipment?) 3.Rossiter (crasher?) 4.Di Resta (Manor always have good wet set-up) 5.Bell (Best driver - shame about the car) |

Robert Bell was *the* man last year. If I was a betting man I'd go for him.

Well, the first blow was struck by Gary Turkington, who set the fastest time in testing, ahead of Conway, Bell and Clucas.
Top five times: 1) Gary Turkington 1:08.182 2) Mike Conway +0.172 3) Robert Bell +0.252 4) Ben Clucas +0.274 5) Charles Hall +0.347 Full times available at: www.singleseaters.co.uk |

If it's dry, you have to fancy Bell or the rapid and strong-engined Fortec cars of Conway and Rossiter. Clucas will be there or thereabouts too, you have to think. Gary Turkington never seems quite to perform in the race, no matter how quick in testing/qualifying, although I would love to see him win. In the wet, a Manor car, or even the pretty smooth Ben Clucas ... the wet will be a bit of an unknown quantity actually - there wasn't much wet running last year.

I see Fortec are miles ahead in the wet too :-(( Bad news for non-Fortec peddlers

Clucas was involved in a first corner shunt, and went out.

What is Turkington playing at!He has the speed (witness fastest lap) and should have taken this Winter Series in style - come on Gary sort it out!Congratulations to Robert Bell and particularly Firstair - didn't think you'd be so quick so soon. Can't see anyone stopping Hamilton from romping it next year though!

Fortec's cars can stop Hamilton ... they seem to have the set up for every circuit, wet or dry. Both Rossiter and Conway have plenty of experience now, and you can't argue with the pace of the cars everywhere. Alex Lloyd can stop Hamilton too. Now that Motaworld have dropped the F3, and the focus is back on Formula Renault, there may be a good fight next year. Lloyd and Hamilton are the same age (there are just 7 days between them) and friends too. Will be an interesting contest.

Gary Turkington came from 15th to 7th. Sounds like a good drive from a guy who is quick, but not renowned for great racecraft. Wish I'd seen it, the boy done good!! I don't know why he qualified 15th - can only assume a disaster struck.

Qualifying for several drivers, including Turkington, was a bit of a surprise. In the dry they were fine but then, in the wet, they were suddenly well off the pace. I love the system of heats and a final, it made for some really great racing as people charged through the field to make up for problems in qualifying or the heat.
As for next year, if Hamilton wants to enter he'll be in the same position as Danny Watts from this year - he'll be the favourite, and expected to win. I actually reckon that Rossiter in a Fortec could give him a run for his money though, as could Davison and Lloyd in a Motaworld. No point talking about that yet (although it is tempting!) because there's still another weekend of this season to go! |

Sorry I missed this thread - been on the rally the last five days.
This is what I predicted in another FRenault winter series thread a bit back: "Bell knows both how to set up these cars and drive them and will, I'm sure, pull Firstair - an extremely professional outfit - towards the front quicker than people might think. My money's on Rossiter, however. Out of the new lot, I'm keeping an eye on di Resta at Manor." Not bad, eh? Nice of Niki Lauda to congratulate Rossiter afterwards, as well. Can't wait for Brands this weekend ... |

I reckon Conway could win the final, but Rossiter's got a decent lead, so I'd be surprised if he doesn't take the title. Rossiter's been waiting for a wet race all year though, so it could go his way.
I reckon the outcome at Brands will be all but sorted tomorrow morning. Brands Indy, although fantastic for tin-tops, is dull as ditchwater for slicks & wings cars. Wish we were going to Rockingham instead... |
