McLaren and Renault threatened to boycott the Australian GP
Although mentioned in another thread, I felt this warranted a thread of it's own:
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/spo...cle5962563.ece (mods, feel free to delete if you disagree!) I've got a feeling that this season is going to eclipse the politics of even the past couple of years - even by Bernie's standards, this is pretty strongly worded: Quote:

It seems that Dennis and Briatore have tried to have him over a barrel and he called their bluff.
Advantage Bernie. |

It's Bernie's ball.
Imagine if it had happened and the words "bringing the sport into disrepute" had reared their ugly heads again! This is going to be an interesting season, but possibly for all the wrong reasons...again. |

Judging by their recent testing performances McLaren may have been better off staying at home and doing Monoposto.

All we are seeing is Bernie's spin on this incident. I would be astonished if Ron Flav et al didn't get something out of the confrontation. They may even have got what they wanted as "write us a cheque now or we won't be in OZ" sounds more like a starting point for negotiation than any serious intent.
All the same a war between The establishment and the teams is unlikely be good for the sport. |

I'm sure there are plenty of companies that could work with the teams and successfully run the F1 championship without Bernie. Don't forget, if he doesn't field enough cars, Bernie faces big payouts to the TV companies, so the teams are in a strong position too. If enough teams felt the need to, they could easily stick two fingers up and go it alone.

Bernie has gotten to where he is today by being the glue between various incongruent parties including the teams, the media and the organizers. A united FOTA is not what he needs and the aftermath of the winner takes all debacle last week is evidence that his power is being to erode. We've only heard one side of this incident here, and I would be very surprised if Bernie's version of events is the whole story.

Can we have a real championship run by the stakeholders (manufacturers), and not on Bernie's whims? Tick tick tick - his time is up.

For God's sake. Shut the heck up, just because some team has thought of a design you haven't. Just get on with the racing. No fan gives a crap about diffusers.

If today's drivers were to strike it'd be Sutil tinkling the ivories. He's a classically trained pianist, like Cevert and De Angelis before him. Some say his best pal Lewis Hamilton is also a bit of a pianist.

And it's not about diffusers anyway.
It's about that stuff that people normally fight about. |

A team that doesn't appear at a F1 race looses it's license to race in F1.
No way they are going to risk that. |

I find it astonishing that the "boss" of F1 comes out to the public acknowledging these presumably behind-closed-doors discussions - then uses such inflammatory language in regards to two of his major stakeholders!!!
